If you’ve never heard of Bert B. Beach, you’re not alone! This Seventh-day Adventist “statesman,” as some have called him, is probably better known by other churches’ world or national leaders than by the members of his own denomination. So who is this man?

The son of missionary parents, Bert was born into church work. His family entertained visiting pastors, teachers, and church administrators frequently, and Bert was just as interested in theological debates as administrative discussions. Not surprisingly, his potential was discovered early—he became the principal of a church school in California at the ripe age of 21. By all appearances it was the beginning of a solid career in education.

But God had additional plans in mind for him, plans that included religious liberty and interchurch relations on a global scale. Bert would eventually learn five languages, work on six of the seven continents, and rub shoulders with some of the world’s most influential religious leaders. Step by faithful step, this man has been determined to follow Jesus’ path—and God’s direct leading in his life is both humbling and inspiring.
